Woodlawn was named after the estate of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The estate was later purchased by the Catholic Church and became the site of Mount St. Mary's University. Woodlawn is also home to the Woodlawn Cemetery, the burial site of many notable people, including Edgar Allan Poe.
