West Haverstraw is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States, located on the west bank of the Hudson River, approximately 30 miles north of New York City. The town has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. West Haverstraw was first settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, and was originally known as Haverstraw. The town was renamed West Haverstraw in 1854 to distinguish it from the village of Haverstraw, which is located on the east bank of the Hudson River. West Haverstraw has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic sites, including the Jacob Sloat House, which was built in 1750 and is one of the oldest surviving houses in Rockland County.
