The community was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from the Willamette Valley. The climate is mild, with average temperatures ranging from 40°F (4°C) in January to 70°F (21°C) in July. The community is home to a number of historical sites, including the West Haven Pioneer Cemetery and the West Haven Grange Hall.
