Wanamassa is a small unincorporated community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is located within Ocean Township, at an elevation of 13 feet (4.0 m) above sea level. The community is situated along the Jersey Shore, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Asbury Park and 10 miles (16 km) south of Sandy Hook. Wanamassa has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The average temperature in January is 33 °F (1 °C), while the average temperature in July is 77 °F (25 °C). The community was founded in the early 19th century by a group of Quakers. It was originally known as "Quakertown", but the name was changed to "Wanamassa" in 1888. The community is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Wanamassa Methodist Church, which was built in 1852.
