Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is a commune in the Gard department in the Occitanie region of southern France. It is located on the left bank of the Rhône River, opposite the city of Avignon. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The town has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century when it was founded by Pope Clement V as a new papal residence. It was later besieged by the French in 1309 and again in 1348 during the Hundred Years' War. The town's heritage includes the Fort Saint-André, a 14th-century fortress, and the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction, a 14th-century Carthusian monastery.
