It has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The town's history dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by the Benedictine monks. It became a fief of the Savoy family in the 14th century and remained so until the 19th century. The town is known for its 17th-century castle, the Castello di Villar Perosa, and its 18th-century church, the Chiesa di San Martino.
