It is located in the El Bierzo region, at the confluence of the Burbia and Valcarce rivers, at an altitude of 519 meters above sea level. The climate is temperate, with an average annual temperature of 12.2 degrees Celsius. Villafranca del Bierzo has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. It was an important stop on the Via de la Plata, a Roman road that connected Astorga with Braga. In the Middle Ages, Villafranca del Bierzo was a major center of pilgrimage on the Way of St. James. The town has a number of historic buildings, including the Church of Santiago, the Monastery of San Pedro de Montes, and the Castle of Villafranca del Bierzo.
