Vientiane, formerly known as Viangchan, is the capital and largest city of Laos. It is located on the banks of the Mekong River in central Laos. The city has a tropical savanna climate with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. Vientiane was founded in 1354 by King Fa Ngum and became the capital of the Lao kingdom in 1560. The city was briefly occupied by the Siamese in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was returned to Laos in 1893. Vientiane is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Pha That Luang, a large golden stupa that is the national symbol of Laos.
