Velikiye Luki is a historic city in Pskov Oblast, Russia, situated on the Lovat River, 406 kilometers (252 mi) south of Pskov and 548 kilometers (341 mi) southwest of Saint Petersburg. The city's climate is humid continental, with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Velikiye Luki was first mentioned in chronicles in 1166 as Luky (Луки). It was a major trading center on the trade route between Novgorod and Smolensk. In the 15th century, Velikiye Luki became part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The city was heavily damaged during the Livonian War (1558-1583) and the Time of Troubles (1598-1613). In the 18th century, Velikiye Luki became a major center of the Russian linen industry. The city was occupied by the Germans during World War II and was heavily damaged. After the war, Velikiye Luki was rebuilt and became a major industrial center. Today, Velikiye Luki is a city of about 90,000 people. It is a major industrial center and a transportation hub. The city is also home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, including the Velikiye Luki Kremlin, the Church of the Intercession, and the Velikiye Luki Museum of Local Lore.
