Velikiy Novgorod, also known as Novgorod, is a historic city in northwestern Russia located at the confluence of the Volkhov and Msta rivers, about 170 kilometers southeast of Saint Petersburg. The city has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Velikiy Novgorod was founded in the 9th century and was a major center of trade and culture in the Middle Ages. The city was a member of the Hanseatic League and was known for its architecture, including the Saint Sophia Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
