It is located at an altitude of 1,050 meters above sea level, in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. The town has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era, and is home to several notable historical sites, including the 16th-century Vélez Blanco Castle, a Renaissance-style palace built by the Marquis of Los Vélez.
