The town was first mentioned in written sources in 1569 and has a rich history, having been part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire before becoming part of independent Lithuania in 1918. Vabalninkas is known for its well-preserved wooden architecture, including the Church of St. George, which was built in 1793 and is a fine example of Lithuanian Baroque architecture.
