Universal City is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It is located 9 miles (14 km) northeast of downtown San Antonio and is part of the San Antonio metropolitan area. The city has a population of 19,191 as of the 2020 census. Universal City is home to the world headquarters of the H-E-B grocery chain and is also the location of the Randolph Air Force Base. The city's history dates back to the 1800s, when it was known as "Salado Creek." In 1940, the city was renamed "Universal City" after the Universal Pictures film studio purchased land in the area to build a film studio. The studio was never built, but the name "Universal City" stuck. The city's weather is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.
