The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Umatilla was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The city's name is derived from the Native American word for "beautiful water." Umatilla is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Umatilla Methodist Church, which was built in 1891, and the Umatilla Public Library, which was built in 1925. The city is also home to a number of parks and recreation areas, including the Umatilla Municipal Park and the Umatilla Sports Complex.
