The city has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Tsimlyansk was founded in 1949 as a result of the construction of the Tsimlyansk Hydroelectric Power Station. The city is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Tsimlyansk Archaeological Museum and the Church of the Holy Trinity.
