It is situated at an altitude of 853 meters (2,799 feet) in the Eastern Ghats, about 500 kilometers (311 miles) north of Chennai and 250 kilometers (155 miles) southwest of Hyderabad. The city is known for its famous hill temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Vishnu, and is considered one of the holiest places of pilgrimage in India.
