Tieli, formerly known as T'ieh-li, is a town in Heilongjiang Sheng, China, located at the foot of the Lesser Khingan Mountains, 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Qiqihar. The town has a cold temperate climate with long, bitterly cold winters and short, warm summers. Tieli has a long history, dating back to the 17th century, when it was a trading post for the fur trade. In the 19th century, Tieli became a major center for gold mining. Today, Tieli is a thriving town with a population of over 100,000 people.
