Thurnau is a municipality in the district of Kulmbach in Bavaria, Germany. It is located in the Upper Franconian Forest Nature Park, at the foot of the Walberla, a wooded hill. The town has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Thurnau was first mentioned in a document in 1127. In the 13th century, it was granted market rights and became a center of trade and commerce. The town's historic heritage includes the Thurnau Castle, a Renaissance-style palace built in the 16th century, and the Stadtkirche, a Gothic church built in the 15th century.
