It is located in the central-southern part of the state, about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Mobile. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Theodore was founded in 1901 as a mill town for the Gulf Lumber Company. It was named after Theodore Roosevelt, who was president of the United States at the time.
