Syosset is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is located on Long Island, approximately 25 miles (40 km) east of Manhattan and 15 miles (24 km) north of Jones Beach State Park. The weather in Syosset is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The history of Syosset dates back to the 17th century, when it was part of the Matinecock Indian territory. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 18th century, and the hamlet was officially established in 1837. Syosset has a rich heritage, and is home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Syosset Public Library, which was built in 1912, and the Syosset Woodbury Community Center, which was built in 1929.
