Stony Brook is a suburban hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island, adjacent to the city of Port Jefferson. The hamlet is home to Stony Brook University, a major research university, and the Stony Brook University Hospital. The area was originally settled by the Algonquin Native Americans and was later colonized by the Dutch. The name "Stony Brook" comes from the Dutch word "steen" meaning "stone" and the English word "brook" meaning "stream". The hamlet has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
