St. Johnsbury is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States, located at 44.4252600° N, -72.0151200° W. It is the shire town of Caledonia County and the largest town in the Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont. The town has a population of 7,434 as of the 2020 census. St. Johnsbury was founded in 1786 by Timothy Bartholomew and named after St. John de Crèvecœur, a French-American farmer and author. The town was originally part of the town of Waterford, but was separated in 1792. St. Johnsbury was a major center of the lumber industry in the 19th century, and was also home to a number of mills and factories. The town's economy declined in the 20th century, but has since rebounded. St. Johnsbury is now a popular tourist destination, and is home to a number of museums and historical sites. The town is also home to St. Johnsbury Academy, a private boarding school founded in 1842. The climate of St. Johnsbury is humid continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers.
