Sparta is a city in Christian County, Missouri, United States. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 65 and Missouri Route 14, approximately 25 miles northeast of Springfield, Missouri. The city has a population of 1,773 as of the 2010 census. Sparta was founded in 1859 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The city was named after Sparta, Greece, because of its location in the Ozark Mountains, which reminded the settlers of the mountainous terrain of Greece. Sparta has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city is home to several historical sites, including the Sparta Civil War Museum and the Sparta Historical Society Museum.
