With a population of 12,582 (2010 Census), it is situated on the Kola Peninsula, approximately 25 kilometers from Murmansk. The city was founded in 1956 as a base for the Soviet Northern Fleet and became a closed city in 1971. It is home to the Nerpa shipyard, which builds and repairs nuclear submarines, and the Russian Northern Fleet's headquarters. The climate in Snezhnogorsk is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
