Sittensen is a town in the district of Rotenburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located in the northern part of the Lüneburg Heath, approximately 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Hamburg. The town has a population of around 5,700 people. The average temperature in Sittensen is 8.5 °C (47.3 °F), and the average annual precipitation is 720 mm (28.3 in). Sittensen was first mentioned in a document in 1232. The town was granted market rights in 1330. In the 16th century, Sittensen became a center of the Reformation. The town was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War. In the 19th century, Sittensen became a center of the textile industry. The town is home to a number of historic buildings, including the St. Martin's Church, which was built in the 13th century.
