Shlissel’burg, Leningrad, Russia

Shlissel'burg, also known as Petrokrepost', is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on an island at the confluence of the Neva River and Lake Ladoga, 35 km northeast of Saint Petersburg. The town has a humid continental climate, with average temperatures ranging from -8.5 °C in January to +18 °C in July. Shlissel'burg was founded in 1323 by Prince Yuri of Moscow and was originally known as Oreshek. It was captured by the Swedes in 1617 and renamed Schlüsselburg, meaning "key fortress". The town was retaken by the Russians in 1702 and renamed Shlissel'burg. Shlissel'burg is home to the Shlisselburg Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
