Shirley is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 26,214 at the 2010 census. Shirley is located on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles (80 km) east of New York City. The hamlet is named after William Shirley, the governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1741 to 1756. Shirley has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The average temperature in July is 77 °F (25 °C), while the average temperature in January is 32 °F (0 °C). Shirley was originally settled by the English in the 17th century. The hamlet was incorporated in 1895. Shirley is home to a number of historical sites, including the William Floyd Estate, the Smithtown Historical Society, and the Shirley-Wading River Historical Society.
