Sharon, Pennsylvania is a city located in Mercer County, in the northwestern part of the state. The city is situated on the Shenango River, just north of the Ohio border. Sharon has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city was founded in 1802 by General John Mercer, and was named after his wife, Sharon. Sharon was a major center of the iron and steel industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, and is still home to several manufacturing companies today. The city is also home to the Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Science and Technology, which is one of the largest planetariums in the United States.
