Semey, formerly known as Semipalatinsk, is a city in East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan, located on the Irtysh River. With a population of over 300,000, it is the second-largest city in the region. The city has a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. Semey has a rich history, dating back to the 18th century when it was founded as a Russian fort. It was a major center for nuclear testing during the Soviet era, and is now home to a museum dedicated to the history of the nuclear program. The city is also known for its cultural heritage, with a number of museums, theaters, and other cultural institutions.
