The town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, and was known as Castra Secura. The town was later conquered by the Visigoths, and then by the Moors. In the 13th century, Segura de León was reconquered by the Christians, and became part of the Kingdom of Castile. The town's heritage includes the Castillo de Segura de León, a medieval castle built by the Moors, and the Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, a Gothic church built in the 15th century.
