Seelen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Seelen is a municipality in the district of Birkenfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is located in the Hunsrück Mountains, at an elevation of 440 meters (1,440 feet) above sea level. The climate is temperate, with average temperatures ranging from 0°C (32°F) in January to 18°C (64°F) in July. Seelen has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. The town was first mentioned in a document from 1270. It was part of the County of Sponheim until 1437, when it was acquired by the Electorate of Trier. Seelen remained part of Trier until the French Revolution, when it was occupied by French troops. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Seelen became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1946, it became part of the newly founded state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Seelen is home to a number of historic buildings, including the 14th-century church of St. Peter and Paul. The town also has a number of traditional festivals, including the Seelenmarkt (Seelen Market), which is held annually in September.
