The village was founded in 1817 by two brothers, James and William Scott, and was named after them. The village has a rich history and heritage, with many historic buildings and sites, including the Scottsville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village is also home to the Scottsville Free Library, which was founded in 1875 and is one of the oldest free libraries in the state of New York.
