The municipality has a long history, dating back to the 13th century. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1248. The town was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1358 to 1669. The town was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The town was rebuilt after the war, and it became a prosperous trading town. The town was also a center of learning, and it had a university from 1419 to 1604. The town was annexed by Prussia in 1701. The town was part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918.
