The municipality has a long history, dating back to the 13th century. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1248. The town was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1358 to 1669. The town was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The town was rebuilt after the war, and it became a prosperous trading town.
