Schenectady, New York, is a city located in the Mohawk Valley, 15 miles northwest of Albany. The city has a rich history and heritage, dating back to its founding by the Dutch in 1661. The city's name is derived from the Mohawk word "skahnectady," which means "place beyond the pines." The city is known for its many historic buildings, including the Stockade District, which is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the United States. Schenectady is also home to several museums, including the Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium, which is one of the oldest museums in the state of New York. The city's climate is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
