It is located in the south-eastern part of the comarca, on the left bank of the Tordera River, and has an area of 16.96 square kilometres. The weather is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. The history of Santa Maria de Palautordera dates back to the 10th century, when it was first mentioned in a document. The town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, and was granted a charter by King Peter III of Aragon in 1339. The town's heritage includes the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, which was built in the 12th century, and the Gothic church of Sant Esteve, which was built in the 14th century.
