The town is located on the Alzette River, and is bordered by the communes of Contern, Hesperange, and Luxembourg City. The climate of Sandweiler is temperate, with warm summers and cool winters. The average annual temperature is 9.1 °C (48.4 °F), and the average annual precipitation is 760 mm (30 in). The town has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. The first recorded mention of Sandweiler is in a document from 963 AD. The town was part of the Duchy of Luxembourg from 1353 to 1795, and then part of the French department of Forêts from 1795 to 1815. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, Sandweiler became part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
