San Rafael is a district of the San José canton, in the San José province of Costa Rica. It is located at an altitude of 1,161 meters (3,809 feet) and has a population of 12,273 (2011). The climate is tropical, with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). The area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Huetar people, and was later colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century. San Rafael is home to several historical and cultural sites, including the Church of San Rafael Arcángel and the National Museum of Costa Rica.
