San Rafael is a city in Marin County, California, United States, located approximately 18 miles (29 km) north of San Francisco. The city has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. San Rafael was founded in 1817 by Mexican colonists and was named after the Archangel Raphael. The city is home to several historic landmarks, including the Mission San Rafael Arcángel, which was founded in 1817.
