San Rafael is a district of the Alajuela canton, in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. It is located at an elevation of 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level, and has a population of approximately 5,000 people. The climate is tropical, with an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). The area was first settled by Spanish colonists in the 16th century, and was originally known as "San Rafael de Alajuela." The district is home to a number of historical and cultural sites, including the Church of San Rafael, which was built in the 17th century.
