San Juan de los Lagos is a municipality located in the central region of the Mexican state of Jalisco, in the Bajío region. It is known for its religious significance, being the second most important pilgrimage site in Mexico after the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with an average temperature of 22 °C (72 °F) and an average annual precipitation of 840 mm (33 in). San Juan de los Lagos was founded in 1542 by Franciscan friars, and its history is closely linked to the veneration of the image of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, which is said to have been found by a shepherd in 1623. The city is home to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, which is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Mexico.
