The town is situated at the confluence of the Spicket River and the Merrimack River, and is bordered by the towns of Methuen, Massachusetts, to the south, and Windham, New Hampshire, to the north. Salem has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The town was first settled in 1636 by a group of Puritans from England. The town was named after Salem, Massachusetts, which was also founded by Puritans. Salem, New Hampshire, has a rich history and heritage, and is home to a number of historic sites, including the Salem Witchcraft Trials Memorial and the Salem Historical Society Museum.
