It is situated at the confluence of the Mohawk and Schoharie Rivers, approximately 15 miles northwest of Albany. The town has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Rotterdam was first settled by the Dutch in the 17th century and was named after the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The town has a rich history and heritage, with many historic buildings and sites, including the Rotterdam Junction Railroad Station, which was built in 1831 and is one of the oldest surviving railroad stations in the United States.
