It is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) north of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The city has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Rochester Hills was founded in 1817 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after Rochester, New York, and was originally known as Avon. The city's economy was originally based on agriculture, but it has since diversified to include a variety of industries, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare.
