Río Branco, also known as Artigas, La Cuchilla, or Rio Branco, is a city in Cerro Largo, Uruguay, located in the north of the department, on the border with Brazil, on the banks of the Yaguarón River. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It was founded in 1851 and named after the Brazilian diplomat and statesman José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco. The city has a rich cultural heritage, with many historical buildings and monuments, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Municipal Palace, and the Teatro Municipal.
