Rensselaer, New York, is a city in Rensselaer County, located on the east bank of the Hudson River, across from Albany. The city has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Rensselaer was founded in 1788 by General Stephen Van Rensselaer and was named after his family estate. The city played an important role in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Rensselaer is home to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering schools in the United States.
