Rensselaer is a city in Jasper County, Indiana, United States. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 231 and State Road 114, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Lafayette. The city has a population of about 5,800 people and is the county seat of Jasper County. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), and the average temperature in January is 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius). The city was founded in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. It was named after Stephen Van Rensselaer, a patroon of New York who was a major landowner in the area. The city was a major center of agriculture and industry in the 19th century, and it is still home to several manufacturing companies today.
