Raków was founded in the 16th century as a refuge for Polish Protestants. It was home to the Raków Academy, a prominent center of Protestant learning, and the printing press of Jan Siestrzyński, which published important works of the Polish Reformation. After the Counter-Reformation, Raków was burned down and its Protestant inhabitants were expelled. Today, it is a small village with a population of around 1,000 people.
