Port Byron is a village in the town of Mentz in Cayuga County, New York, United States. It is located on the east shore of the Seneca River, 10 miles (16 km) north of Auburn. The village has a population of 1,209 as of the 2010 census. The climate of Port Byron is humid continental, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The average temperature in July is 73 °F (23 °C), and the average temperature in January is 25 °F (−4 °C). The average annual precipitation is 35 inches (890 mm). Port Byron was founded in 1794 by John Hardenbergh. The village was originally called "Hardenbergh's Landing", but the name was changed to "Port Byron" in 1829. The village was a major shipping port on the Seneca River in the 19th century. Port Byron is home to the Port Byron Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from the village's history. The village is also home to the Port Byron Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
