Porkhov, Pskov, Russia

Porkhov is a town in Pskov Oblast, Russia, located on the Shelon River, 75 kilometers south of Pskov. The town has a population of 10,522 (2010 Census). Porkhov was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1239. It was an important fortress on the border of the Novgorod Republic and the Principality of Pskov. The town was captured by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1471. In the 16th century, Porkhov was a major center of trade and crafts. The town was badly damaged during the Livonian War and the Time of Troubles. In the 18th century, Porkhov was rebuilt and became a district center. The town is known for its ancient architecture, including the 14th-century Porkhov Fortress.
