It is located in the northern part of the oblast, on the Onega River, about 100 kilometers south of Arkhangelsk. The town has a population of about 11,000 people. The climate of Plesetsk is humid continental, with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. The average temperature in January is -15 degrees Celsius, and the average temperature in July is +15 degrees Celsius. Plesetsk was founded in 1957 as a closed town to support the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, which is located about 10 kilometers east of the town. The cosmodrome is one of the most important space launch facilities in Russia, and it has been used to launch a wide variety of satellites, spacecraft, and interplanetary probes. Plesetsk is also home to a number of other military and industrial facilities, including a naval base and a shipyard.
